There was a brief stint in elementary school where I made necklaces and sold them to the other kids in class, but I was told by the principal that I was not allowed to conduct such business on school property or at school events. She killed my entrepreneurship. One summer in middle school I co-taught (assisted) with my mom’s summer school science class. This was actually a ton of fun as I got to teach all of the fun experiments and I think I had to break a few 8 year old hearts as well.
Okay, first real, on the payroll job was Jackson Hewitt as a file clerk for a couple of tax seasons in high school. Basically I had to reorganize the entire filing system and shred a lot of paper. I also stapled a ton of W-2’s. The fun part was seeing how some of these people made their income. Every year there was the handful of people that had stacks of W-2’s from the race track.
During college, I did pretty well here. (I can 10-key the phonebook like no one’s business and still can’t walk through a grocery store without counting things on the shelves.) I worked there for almost 3 years and honestly when I first moved to NYC considered working nights for them to make extra money. I doubt the people up here are as fun to work with though. I was lucky that I had a great team and worked for a great boss. However, it was the first time I was ever accused of sexual harassment. The hours were tough and inconsistent so I left them and started working here my last year of college. I was an Account Rep. for Target working the evening 3pm - 10pm shift. I was responsible for setting up loads, making sure drivers showed up and that everyone had proper paperwork. I could probably name the locations of all Target Distribution Centers in the country if I had to. If I had found transportation and logistics interesting at all, I would have stayed. They offered to keep me on after college and work on a ‘career’. My boss knew I wanted to end up in NY and even talked about looking into jobs in the Elizabeth or Newark offices, but I politely declined once I landed my ‘dream job’ in Asbury Park, NJ.
And I’ll leave it at that…
